The top of the 3 shape: Things that we are experiencing yet we don’t understand them yet.

The curve next to the 3: You are dreaming. You are not awake or in a deep sleep. Your brain makes stories and pictures for you to see.

The swoop above the 3 shape: Our reactions to the things we experience.

The dot above the 3 shape: when you are the most calm, the most peaceful.

Closure:

Students will watch their fellow students perform together.

Assessment:

Students will be asked “what is expressive movement?” And “how do you tell a story through dance?”

Notes:

Flower dance:

start as "seeds" (child's pose)

begin to grow, staying low to the ground

spinning in a circle

keep spinning as you grow tall

all the way to tippy toes

spin on tippy toes

pull sunlight down, in towards your stomach

bloom (do a C jump or a star jump)

blow in the wind (move side to side, reaching)

everyone comes into the center to make a "bouquet of flowers"

everyone reaches their hands up and wiggles their fingers or does jazz hands

everyone pulls sunlight down, their hands come into the center on top of each others

we count "1, 2, 3" then say "will you grow with me? 1, 2

I’ll grow with you. All together 3, 2, 1 BLOOM" on "bloom" everyone reaches their hands back

up to the sky.

Storytelling through dance scenarios (students randomly pick):

You are a caterpillar. You make a cocoon around yourself. Then, you break free from your cocoon and grow into a beautiful butterfly.

You are an alien from a planet far away. The only way you know how to communicate to humans is to do funky dances. Communicate something through dance.

You are a magical fairy, but you don’t want anyone to see you. You tip toe quietly around until you find a safe place to fly away.

You are a monster but you are mute, meaning you can’t make a sound. The only way you can scare people is to dance.

Example: you have claws, you make yourself large, you slither like a snake, you show your teeth, you have spikes or a tail.

You are a mermaid. A sea witch puts a spell on you and you grow legs. You are not used to your legs so you keep falling down while you dance. Finally you get used to your legs and you can dance as much as you want.

You are a bug that suddenly starts to grow. You grow so huge!

Example: you wiggle, you have antennae.

You are a rockstar and you are performing on stage for thousands of people. You play your instrument and you dance around on stage.

Example: you are playing guitar, you are playing drums, you are singing,

but remember you can not make a sound.

You start as a seed and you grow into a tree. You blow in the wind. Suddenly a lumber jack comes along and chops you down. Choose one person to be the lumber jack.

You are Cupid and it’s Valentines day. You fly around and you use your magic bow and arrow to make people hug each other. Choose one person to be Cupid.

You are in a synchronized swim team. You dance together in the water, doing the same thing at the same time. Remember, you are in water!

I will explain to the students that you can be expressive and tell a story through many forms of dance

Ballet, lyrical, hip hop, jazz, etc.

I will encourage students to use any style of dance that they prefer, if they have knowledge of a particular style of dance.

Yoga Week 3: Animals and Om's

Topic: Imaginative poses and sounds

Theme: Animals and Om's

Objectives:

students will be able to identify the components of being STARS, demonstrate a sun salutation, identify and do poses that are named after animals, identify an Om symbol, be able to explain what Om means and why we Om, and will be able to Om.

Materials:

Yoga mats for all students and paper and pencils for drawing.

Instructional Methods:I will begin the lesson with everyone seated in a circle then individual students will read my STARS posters. Then I will ask "who are we?" to which they will reply, "we are STARS, we are serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful."
Then, I will have the whole group follow me in a sun salutation. After the sun salutation students will practice animal poses with me and make that animal’s noise in the pose. Then, I will tell the students to find a partner and practice two different animal poses. The partners will then have a chance to show the rest of the students their favorite poses and their animal noise. Next, I will pass out paper and pencils and ask the students to draw an animal that a pose is named after and write the name of the pose. We will have a show and tell of our drawings. Then I will teach the students what Om means/is. Then I will teach them how to Om. We will all Om together. Then I will have the students draw an Om symbol on their paper and label it (on the back of their paper). We will Om together one last time after drawing and labeling the symbol. Lastly, I will lead the students through a guided meditation, using one of their answers from last week “what brings you peace?”

Engaging Exercises:

In order to meet the objectives, students will answer what STARS means, I will ask different students to read each blurb for STARS.

Students will be engaged during our sun salutation.

Students will be encouraged to practice confidence by showing the rest of their group the animal pose and animal noise. The animal noise should draw attention to the student performing the pose, for anyone who’s attention is lost.

I will help anyone who wants help with their drawing of an animal or Om symbol.

Group Activities:

-Students will be actively engaged while doing (and saying) this sun salutation for kids:

breath in, lift your arms up and say "I'm thankful for the sun!"

breathe out, let your finger tips rain down to the ground (forward fold, uttanasana) and say "I'm thankful for the rain!"

breathe in, look in front of you (half lift, ardha uttanasana) and say "I'm thankful for the grass!"

lower all the way to the ground then do cobra pose and say "I'm thankful for the animals!"

push your hips back into downward facing dog pose

step one foot forwards into a low lunge, lift your arms and say "I'm thankful for the flowers!"

we will repeat this one more time, stepping the opposite foot forward in low lunge.

Students will do animal poses all together and make the noises all together.

Students will Om all together.

Partner Activities:

Students will choose partners to do animal poses and make animal noises with.

Individual Activities:

Students will draw animals and Om symbols individually.

Closure:

Lastly, I will lead the students through a guided meditation, using one of their answers from last week “what brings you peace?”

Assessment:

I will pass out the plastic gold coins to those who can answer these questions:

-name two animal poses and make the animal noises.

-what are the three components of an Om symbol?

Notes:

Students don’t have to make animal noises, but they will be encouraged to do so. The Om symbol is not intended to be a religious study. After a yoga practice, it is common for the instructor to have the class Om with them. I would like for the students to know what Om means using a simple explanation.

What the Om symbol means:

The bottom of the 3 shape: You are awake and using all of your senses to be aware of what is going on around you.

We Om together to embrace all of these aspects of ourselves and to understand that all other living beings also have these aspects of themselves.

Yoga Week 2: Balancing and Breathing

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the components of being STARS, demonstrate balance and explain what it means to be balanced, shake maracas, will be able to do five finger breathing and balloon breathing, and will be able to do a sun salutation.

Materials:

Yoga mats for all students, maracas, balloons, plastic "gratitude coins", paper, and markers.

Instructional Methods:

I will begin the lesson with everyone seated in a circle then individual students will read my STARS posters. Then I will ask "who are we?" to which they will reply, "we are STARS, we are serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful."
Then, I will have the whole group follow me in a sun salutation and I will also teach tree pose and partner tree pose. After the yoga sequence, students will each have a chance to shake maracas with a partner. They will shake the maracas while the rest of the group sings. Next, I will teach how to do "balloon breathing" and I will pass out balloons to each student and have them blow up the balloons.  Then we will play "balance the balloon." Students' attention will be drawn to keeping the balloon in the air. The student who lets the balloon fall to the ground will do a balancing yoga pose.

Who ever keeps their balloon in the air the longest gets a gold "gratitude coin," which they place in a paper bag with their name on it and can save to win prizes on the last day of class.

Then we will do the same thing but in partner tree pose. Next, the students will practice five finger breathing by tracing their hands. Using the traced hand, they will write in their thumb: something that makes them feel peaceful, in their index finger: How they think of themselves (such as "I am kind"), in their middle finger: who they want to be, in their ring finger: somewhere that they've been (such as "the beach"), and in their pinky finger: somewhere they want to go (such as "disney land").

We will use what they wrote to focus on peace, dreams, and the senses. The kids will fill out a worksheet pertaining to the these things.

lower all the way to the ground then do cobra pose and say "I'm thankful for the animals!"

push your hips back into downward facing dog pose

step one foot forwards into a low lunge, lift your arms and say "I'm thankful for the flowers!"

we will repeat this one more time, stepping the opposite foot forward in low lunge.

Partner Activities:

-After the sun salutation students will do partner tree pose. Then, each have a chance to shake maracas with a partner. They will shake the maracas while the rest of the group sings:

Shake shake shake, take a break

shake shake shake, take a break

shake up high, shake down low

shake above your head, shake above your toes

shake shake shake, take a break, shake shake shake, take a break

Yoga Week 1: Sun Salutations

Topic: Sun Salutations

Theme: What makes us STARS?

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the components of being STARS and will display the behavior along with being STARS. Students will also be able to do one sun salutation (Surya Namaskar A for children), and they will be able to explain what a sun salutation is and why we do them in the beginning of every class. Lastly, students will begin to form ideas of what yoga means to them.

Materials:

Yoga mats for all students, poster with blurbs that explain what it means to be serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful,  stars cut out from poster paper with students names on them to be used as place marks, a large sun cut out of poster paper to be placed in the middle of our sun salutation circle, a book titled "I am Yoga" by Susan Verde. I have most of these materials, however I will have to see if the students can bring their own yoga mats, or if the class can be provided them. For the first day, we can do our sun salutations on a carpet, if need be. I will hand out images depicting our sun salutation for them to practice at home.

Instructional Methods:

Begin the lesson with everyone seated in a circle around the sun where their star place mat is. After introducing myself, I will get to know each individual student by asking each student to the right of me, "what is your name, what is your favorite animal, can you make the noise that animal makes? and what do you think yoga is?" Then, I will explain what being STARS means by having individual students read my STARS posters. Then I will tell the students that each day I will ask "who are we?" to which they will reply, "we are STARS, we are serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful."
Then, I will explain what a sun salutation is (We do sun salutations to greet the day, to remind ourselves that we have arrived to our mats, we are only focused on our yoga lesson for the next hour, and we are thankful for our practice) and have the whole group follow me in a sun salutation. After the sun salutation I will play "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles and allow the students to have a quick dance break. Then, I will have the kids sit "criss-cross apple sauce" in our circle and I'll read them the book "I am Yoga" By Susan Verde. Lastly, I will pass out paper and ask the students to write or draw (or both) what they think yoga is/ means.

Engaging Exercises:

In order to meet the objectives, students will answer to "what is your name, what is your favorite animal, can you make the noise that animal makes? and what do you think yoga is?" by responding individually and being respectful while another student is sharing. Then, after explaining to the students what STARS means, I will ask different students to read each blurb for STARS. Then, I will teach them that when I say who are we? students will reply "we are STARS, we are serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful."

-Students will be actively engaged while doing (and saying) this sun salutation for kids:

breath in, lift your arms up and say "I'm thankful for the sun!"

breathe out, let your finger tips rain down to the ground (forward fold, uttanasana) and say "I'm thankful for the rain!"

breathe in, look in front of you (half lift, ardha uttanasana) and say "I'm thankful for the grass!"

step one foot back into a low lunge, lift your arms and say "I'm thankful for the flowers!"

lower all the way to the ground then do cobra pose and say "I'm thankful for the animals!"

push your hips back into downward facing dog pose and say "I'm thankful for being me!"

we will repeat this one more time, stepping the opposite foot back in low lunge.

-After the sun salutation students will be free to dance around for the length of "Here Comes the Sun" by the beatles, this is more of a brain break rather than an engagement.

-Students will sit criss-cross apple sauce while silently listening to me read the book "I am Yoga" by Susan Verde. Students will be encouraged to ask questions after I'm finished reading.

Closure:

To close the lesson, I will ask again, "who are we" to which the students will reply "we are STARS, we are serious, trustworthy, attentive, respectful, and successful." I will then have the students bow their head with their hands in a prayer position as a sign of respect for themselves and everyone in the room. They will repeat "Namaste" after me.

Assessment:

I will pass out paper to each student and ask them to write or draw (or both) what they think yoga is/ means.

Notes:

Students who might refuse to do the sun salutation may sit criss-cross apple sauce and watch for the first day. For the following weeks, the students will be asked to do the sun salutation with the large group. If they still refuse, I will break the large group up into small groups to do the sun salutation, until everyone is comfortable enough to do it all together.

-STARS poster will say:

Serious:

I will follow directions and try my best.

Trustworthy:

I will trust that this is a safe learning environment and that I can ask for help.

Attentive:

I will listen to who is speaking, with out interruption.
